Hi,

It looks as if 'themes' have been implemented in the OSD now, but where would I go to find out how to implement them, what constraints there are, can you add in your own fonts etc?

I'd be quite interested in helping to create some themes and upload them for others to download etc.

One such question I have is - where can you store the images you use? Do you store them on the OSD itself (if so how do you do that?), can you store them on a memory card instead? Is there a realistic filesize restriction before things start running s-l-o-w? Are there any existing alternative themes other people have created that I can download and install?

I think you'll get a better response to this on the mailing list thread I started, since it seems most of the devs hang out there, but I also asked folks to post here too.

The very quick answer is:
- look at /usr/local/res/theme.ini on your OSD (via telnet) and the images it references
- create a theme.in in a directory in a media card or in USB
- in the theme ini, create keys for the images you wish to override in your theme (the ones you don't override are taken by the default theme) and make them point to images you will put on the same media as your custom theme.ini
- in the settings panel you have a Theme item (in recent firmwares of course) where you can specify that the OSD should use your theme.ini instead of the default.

Regarding questions:

** where can you store the images you use? Do you store them on the OSD itself (if so how do you do that?), can you store them on a memory card instead?

You store them on a removable media (USB or card)

** Is there a realistic filesize restriction before things start running s-l-o-w?

You should stick to the same image sizes that the orginal theme uses, for best results.

** Are there any existing alternative themes other people have created that I can download and install?

Not yet, at least that i know of. There was an "hello kitty" example theme on the original themes patch (search the mailing list archives) but i suppose it's outdated now, plus it was just a pretty hacked up sample. I suggest you make your own, it's easier and better.

** can you add in your own fonts ?

You can customize mainly images, plus some colors and i think also the "icons" font, but i'm not 100% sure that key is used. You can check it easily by trying to override it with any other font.

Cheers,
